Two mates,
one big shed.
How a doctor and a nurse built Bendigo's home for bouldering - and somewhere to stick around afterwards.
Bendigo deserved a proper place to climb - so we built one.
How The Hold started
The Hold started with a simple idea: Bendigo deserved a proper place to climb - and somewhere to stick around afterwards. We are James and Kenji, two locals who built the region's only bouldering and fitness studio from the ground up.
By day, we both work in healthcare. Kenji is a local Bendigo doctor. James trained as a nurse back in the north of England before making the move to Australia. The Hold grew out of the same instinct that took us into those jobs - build something that brings people together and looks after them.
From day one this was about more than the walls.
It was about the people who fill the place after a session - sprawled on the couches, swapping beta, planning the next climb. The coffee machine running, music on, kids on the easy wall, a crew of regulars who started as strangers. That is the bit we are proudest of.
Meet James & Kenji

James
Co-founderOriginally a nurse from the north of England, James swapped hospital shifts for the southern hemisphere and never looked back. He runs the day-to-day at The Hold - the front desk, the coaching program, and making sure everyone who walks through the door feels at home.
Kenji
Co-founderA local Bendigo doctor, Kenji is the operations half of the partnership. He brought the idea of a proper community space to life - somewhere the whole town could move, meet people and stay a while - and keeps the place running behind the scenes.
The things that matter to us
Everyone's welcome
First-timer or seasoned crusher, five years old or fifty-five - there is a wall and a grade here for you. No experience, no special gear, no judgement.
Community first
The couches, the coffee, the chat after a climb. The Hold is built to be a place you belong, not just a place you train.
More than a gym
A full cafe and lounge bar under the same roof. Climb hard, then stay for a good coffee or a cold one with the people you just met.
Climbing done well
Fresh problems set across six colour grades, auto-belays for rope climbing, and coaching that actually helps you get better.
A place for everyone
You do not need to be strong, brave or sporty to start climbing - you just need to turn up. We see five-year-olds on their first holds, parents giving it a go, mates after work and grandparents cheering from the couches. Kids classes run from age five, and a quick safety intro is all it takes to get going.
